Free in both senses

Inkscape costs nothing to download and use, and it is also free in the licensing sense: the source code is public and anyone may study, modify and redistribute it under the GNU General Public License. There is no trial period, no watermark on exported files, no feature locked behind a subscription and no seat count to manage.

Can you use it for paid work?

Yes. The license governs the program, not the artwork you make with it. Logos, shirt designs, packaging, cut files and illustrations drawn in Inkscape are yours, and you can sell them or hand them to a client with no attribution requirement and no royalty. Small studios, print shops and craft sellers use it exactly this way.

Where the money goes instead

Development is carried out by volunteers and funded by donations. The project is a member of the Software Freedom Conservancy, a US 501(c)(3) non-profit that handles its legal and financial affairs, which is why donations made in the United States are tax deductible. Contributing time — testing, translating, writing documentation, answering questions — counts as much as money.

What "free" does not mean

Free software is not the same as unsupported. Bug reports go to the project's issue tracker, questions are answered by other users in chat and on the forum, and the manuals are extensive. What you do not get is a commercial support contract or a phone line, so plan around community-paced answers if you are on a deadline.

Comparing it honestly

Inkscape is a capable SVG-first editor and a genuine alternative to paid vector tools for most drawing, illustration and cut-file work. It is not a drop-in replacement for every commercial workflow: files created in proprietary formats may need conversion, and some print shops still ask for specific PDF or EPS settings. Can I use Inkscape commercially?
